Sunderland has been selected by the
Government to be a pathfinder in
the Aiming High for Disabled
Children programme which will
transform services for disabled
children and young people
and their families. How will we do this?
- giving more families the type of short
breaks they want
- giving families better information
about the support they can get
- being open and upfront about which
children and young people can use
each service
- really listening to what disabled
children and young people and their
families want and acting on this.
To make this happen, a lot of new
funding has been provided over the next
3 years. In 2008-09 we have nearly £300,000 and in 2009-10 and 2010-11
we will have almost £1 million per year.
As a pathfinder, Sunderland will be
expected to lead the way in developing
the services and ways of working that
families want and that work best.
A Participation Fund has been established as part of the Aiming High Programme to enable disabled children to participate in activities that they would like to do, but where there is currently a barrier preventing them from doing so.

Sunderland Strategy for Children and Young People with a Learning Difficulty or a Disability (LDD)
Parents and carers and practioners from a range of agencies have been working together to develop a Sunderland LDD strategy. The purpose of the strategy is to develop a co-ordinated, partnership, lifespan approach to improving outcomes for children and young people with a learning difficulty or a disability (LDD).
Cllr Patricia Smith, Portfolio Holder for Children's Services and Dr Helen Paterson, Director of Children's Services are invitiing parents and carers to take part in the consultation on the strategy, which is taking place between March and June 2009. Copies of the draft strategy and the consultation questions, and the invitation to take part can be downloaded. Completed questionnaires are to be returned to Kathryn Rutherford by 14th May 2009.
